documenta Institute Discourse #2 – Lecture by Mark Nash

Since documenta11 (2002) for which Mark Nash was a co-curator, much curatorial and critical discussion has focused on the relevance of a post-colonial problematic to contemporary art and curating today. In this lecture Mark Nash will discuss exhibitions in which he has extended the postcolonial frame to include the cold war as an additional schema: Things Fall Apart (2015, 2016) and Viva L’Italia (2017). Both exhibitions included artists whose work involves different approaches to the archive. In the course of this talk he would also hope to make some observations on the ways of the documenta archive can support creative and critical work.
Mark Nash is an independent curator and writer. Previously Professor and Head of Department Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art London he also helped establish the International Centre for Fine Art Research at the University of the Arts, London. A former editor of the journal Screen he currently teaches at Birkbeck College London. As a curator Nash has collaborated extensively with Okwui Enwezor on The Arena project at the Venice Biennial 2015, including an epic live reading of Karl Marx’s Das Kapital; ‘The Short Century’ exhibition and documenta11, (both 2002) and also with Ute Meta Bauer on the 3rd Berlin Biennial (2004). He has also collaborated with artist Isaac Julien on numerous film and art projects and has written extensively on artist’s work with the moving image.
“documenta Institute Discourse” invites to think together with international speakers about archives, research and education. This can lead to imaginations about unexpected functions, strategies, and ways of acting for archives, research and education institutions. The public program is a collaboration between the documenta professor at the Kunsthochschule Kassel and the documenta archive. It is part of the process of establishing a new documenta Institute in Kassel.

documenta Institute Discourse #2 – Vortrag von Mark Nash

Seit der documenta11 (2002), bei der Mark Nash einer der Co-Kuratoren war, hat sich die kritische Diskussion weitgehend auf die Bedeutung postkolonialer Ansätze für die zeitgenössische Kunst und für Fragen des Kuratorischen konzentriert. In seinem Vortrag wird Mark Nash Ausstellungen vorstellen, in denen er den postkolonialen Rahmen um den Kalten Krieg als zusätzliche Denkfigur erweitert hat: „Things Fall Apart“ (2015, 2016) und „Viva L’Italia“ (2017). Beide Ausstellungen umfassten Künstler/innen, deren Arbeiten sich unterschiedlich mit dem Archiv auseinandersetzten. Im Verlauf des Vortrags wird er auch einige Überlegungen anstellen, wie das documenta archiv imaginatives und kritisches Arbeiten unterstützen kann.
Mark Nash ist unabhängiger Kurator und Autor. Zuvor war er Professor und Vorstand des Instituts Curating Contemporary Art am Royal College of Art in London. Er war ebenfalls an der Gründung des Internationalen Zentrums für Kunstforschung an der Universität der Künste in London beteiligt. Als ehemaliger Redakteur der Zeitschrift Screen lehrt er derzeit am Birkbeck College London. Als Kurator hat Nash mit Okwui Enwezor am Projekt der Arena bei der Biennale in Venedig 2015, einschließlich einer epischen Live-Lektüre von Karl Marx „Das Kapital“, bei der Ausstellung „The Short Century“ und der documenta11 (beide 2002) zusammengearbeitet und mit Ute Meta Bauer bei der 3. Berlin Biennale (2004). Mit dem Künstler Isaac Julien hat er zahlreiche Film- und Kunstprojekte durchgeführt und ausführlich über dessen filmische Arbeit geschrieben.
„documenta Institute Discourse “ lädt dazu ein, mit internationalen Sprecher*innen über das Archivieren, Forschen und Vermitteln nachzudenken. Dabei können neue und unerwartete Funktionen, Handlungsformen, Strategien und Imaginationen von Archiven, Forschungs- und Vermittlungsinstitutionen zur Sprache kommen. Die öffentliche Veranstaltungsreihe in Kooperation zwischen der documenta Professur an der Kunsthochschule Kassel und dem documenta archiv begleitet den Prozess der Entwicklung eines neuen documenta Instituts in Kassel.
