Sustainable Film School Day 2024

Film schools join forces for a sustainable future - Sustainable Film School Day 2024 during the 74th Berlinale.

On February 20, 2024, representatives from numerous German film and media schools met for the first time to discuss their role in the transformation towards a more socially and ecologically just industry. The event was organized by the Sustainability Office for Teaching at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF and the Changemakers.film initiative with the support of Macromedia - University for Applied Sciences and MFG Baden-Württemberg. Dr. Susanne Ritzmann, Professor of Sustainable Product Design at the Kunsthochschule Kassel, was also present as a driving force.

In view of the multiple crises, the requirement profiles of many film and media professions are changing. Universities are faced with the challenge of preparing their graduates for these changing job profiles, trying out alternative ways of working as educational institutions and sending impulses into the industry and, last but not least, aligning their own productions, courses and administrative structures with sustainability principles.

It was agreed to work towards these common goals in a network of film and media universities. The concrete steps agreed include the development of further training opportunities and tools for lecturers, an exchange on curricula and working towards binding standards for university productions. Around 30 professors, lecturers, students, production and course directors, sustainability managers and selected industry representatives took part in the meeting in Berlin.
