Lecture Jonas Staal at Kunsthochschule Kassel

On Thursday 21 January 2021 from 9.30h to 11.30h visual artist Jonas Staal will give a zoom-lecture for the seminar Art Practice and its Significance within the program Mehrdimensionale Strategien at Kunsthochschule Kassel.

Jonas Staal is a visual artist whose work deals with the relationship between art, propaganda and democracy. He is the founder of artistic and political organisations such as the New World Summit (2012-ongoing) or the New Unions campaign (2016-ongoing).
Staal often takes the risk of creating and using unusual formats. Public events, staged debates, discussions, attractive shows and installations – all are somewhere between exhibition, performance, theatre.
The recurring topics of his artistic practice are the rise of alt-right and the possibilities of new democratic formations.
He is also well known for his collaboration with the Rojava revolutionary movement, whose autonomous government, the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria, commissioned him to develop a new public parliament.

Jonas Staal’ contribution is the fourth lecture of the seminar Art Practice and its Significance, a series of talks by artists who have unique experiences of collaborating with different groups outside the institutional art world. This seminar is organised by artists Matthijs de Bruijne and Cecilia Vallejos together with the students of Mehrdimensionale Strategien and hosted by the Fine Arts Department of Kunsthochschule Kassel with the financial support of the Botschaft des Königreichs der Niederlande.

Art Practice and its Significance is open to art students and scholars of different departments of the University of Kassel and to other young art practitioners interested in these type of new approaches to art creation.
