Machine learning is expected to help humans evolve, even in the field of plastic surgery. However, plastic surgeons must be aware that artificial intelligence (AI) could create a biased view of patients, rather than promote objectivity.
More and more young people use algorithms to determine if their face is attractive, and AI to score their beauty. But what they really want is the perfect body and the perfect face without the help of social media filters, to take the perfect selfie from all angles, instantly and without applying software. Their reasoning for plastic surgery is no longer to look like a star, but instead to become more and more like the idealized, perfect self. To become as beautiful as an Instagram filter in real life.
Chocho Studio uses 3D-scanning technologies to reshape the face, to make it possible for surgeons and girls to collaborate on creating the perfectly Instagrammable face, and to get a higher beauty score and more attention.
Echo Can Luo obtained her master’s degree at the Kunsthochschule Kassel in 2018. Based on algorithms, including 3D modelling and face tracking, her project aims to look into the biased and differentiated algorithms in the process of applying and testing software as well as the influence of discrimination and bias on real-life situations and data.
Zu Gast im Rektorat #27

22th October 2019 – 11th December 2019
Opening 22th October 2019, 6.30 p.m.
Rectorate Kunsthochschule Kassel
South Building / Room 1220
The exhibition can be visited by appointment (rektorat[at]kunsthochschule-kassel.de) until 11.12.2019.
The exhibition format “Zu Gast im Rektorat” was initiated in the spring of 2012. With two exhibitions per semester, the Rectorate of the Kunsthochschule Kassel provides students, graduates and teachers with an unusual space for their works to be presented.
